Cisano is a
small town in the municipality of Bardolino. Just a few years ago, in the
square next to the lake, the remains of a lake-dwelling village were found, while
its existence is already documented in some writings of the years 915 and 1225.
Its history is linked to the neighbouring municipality. (see Bardolino)
boasts a Romanesque church that is one of the oldest of the lake, dating back
to the fifth century AD. Initially called Church of San Giuliano, it changed
its name, in the eleventh century, into Pieve di Santa Maria when the bell
tower was built, while maintaining its Romanesque façade and the finely
centenary festival is held in the old town in September, called “Sagra dei
Osei”, which is literally translated "the festival of birds". Indeed,
during the festival, the narrow streets of the centre are home to birds of all
kinds, such as blackbirds, finches, nightingales etc., creating a sort of
"singing competition", while raptors perform their own show. Some ancient
dishes are served during the festival, like the famous polenta and birds.
