Malcesine covers
an area which is characterised by a strong gradient, starting from the lake to
the Monte Baldo with its 1800 metres. It is one of the most charming towns of
the lake and Goethe was the first who understood its tourist potential, in1786,
when he described it in his book as an idyllic timeless place.

Today it is
difficult to distinguish its beautiful medieval centre, thanks to a perfect
blend of old and new, which creates a picturesque village of great urban and
architectural value.

It seems
that the name of Malcesine was “Mala Sila”, a dry stone belonged to the Bishops
of Verona and the Scaligeri.  The first
settlements of Etruscan origin date back to the year  500 BC, the same period during which,
according to some scholars, the Rocca di Malcesine was built. It was destroyed
by the Franks in 590 and then rebuilt, and it became part of the feudal bishop
of Verona. Last year it hosted the Redbull event, during which the best divers
in the world threw themselves from the tower of the castle overlooking the
lake, surrounded by a fabulous scenario. Even the Romans left their mark, as
shown by the finds of graves, coins and tools used at the time. From 1277 to
1387 the Rocca was named by Scaligeri da Alberto I della Scala the Rocca degli
Scaligeri. After their decline, the town was ruled by the Visconti and the
Republic of Venice until 1797. The town is also known for its numerous sport
activities and for its cable car connecting it to the Monte Baldo.
